Echo Yuan is a product and industrial designer based in Brooklyn, New York. She is interested in taking something we already know and challenging our preconceived notions of the subject. Through observing, learning, and thinking, this process refreshes our  ways of perceiving the surroundings. While her work focuses heavily on tangible products, she also enjoys exploring and working with different mediums, and she is always excited to play with new tools.

06 Portable boxing bands
May 2019
 Polyester vinyl, polyester mesh, neoprene & rubber band












Inspired by the Frog’s specific tongue movement, the portable boxing band is designed to allow the user to practice the action of boxing wherever and whenever they want. The device is made of sport bands which are attached to the backpiece which allow the user to strengthen the arms as well as improving boxing techniques. The backpiece is made of neoprene which is a breathable sporting material and its stability aids the boxer to stand upright.

First prototype

The first prototypes that we made are to test out the “retraction” idea and the placement of the bands, so we made multiple prototypes with different materials for testing.

We decided on the basic form of our design and tried to fabricate it with one piece of fabric. The fabric is elastic and comfortable enough, however, this design doe not stablize shoulders and needs a better mechanism.

We improved our design by deciding to use two different materials. The arm part will be fabricated in any rubber/elastic material (we used latex in this one), and the backpiece will be fabricated in any sporting material.
